Synopsis:
Michael Scott, regional manager of failing paper company Dunder Mifflin, is told that his branch may be downsized. While he is, unsuccessfully, trying to keep that a secret, it is Ryan Howard's first day on the job as a temp. Michael introduces us to the rest of the office including Pam Beesley, Jim Halpert, and Dwight Schrute, and we learn about their relationships with each other.

- Michael asks Ryan if he as ever seen "Punk'd"; BJ Novak, who plays Ryan, got his career start on "Punk'd"
- Kate Flannery does not appear in this episode. Instead, Meredith is played by Henriette Mantel
